Hey, book lovers.
So this review is of one of my new favourite books called Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I read this one about a month ago while I was in the middle of trying to write a research proposal and planning a horror story, for two separate assessments- so when I wasn’t writing those, I was coming right back to this book.
Celaena Sarothien is an assassin. She’s eighteen years old and has been kept captive in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, but has now been selected to compete for Prince Dorian in a competition to find the King’s Champion. If she defeats the eliminations and wins, she’ll serve as the King’s assassin for three years before being granted her freedom. She’s in the running for her life, and she’ll do everything she can to get it. But things get interesting when she grows closer to the Prince and he too starts to show his affections for her.
She’s witty and rebellious, and her character is one of the main things that hooked me from the very beginning. I love fiery, determined characters and she’s a pretty good representation of that. She is brittle on the outside, showing no emotion to those around her as she has done for so long in the salt mines, but as the story progresses in the castle and she interacts with Captain Westfall, who escorted her, and the Prince, you begin to see a softer side of her aswell. She’s brave, but kind and often more sensitive, too. If a character is likeable, I’m hooked, it’s as simple as that for me.
She fights hard, too. The other champions are other assassins from other parts of the Kingdom, and as she competes against them she realises not only what and who she is up against but her own strengths. She is easily offended and often agitated, but Captain Westfall and the Prince don’t seem to let this faze them and they often leave her to it and take her back to her rooms, or they kick the truth into her and she realises that nothing is always fair.
By the end of the book, Celaena is a different person. She’s stronger, is keen to stop the evil that is dwelling in the castle and earn her freedom, earning a new love along the way.
